MARTIN LUTHER
Martin Luther, also known as Martin Luther McCoy, quite simply was born to sing. A truly gifted and highly styled musician whose studying of gospel, funk, rock and soul music at an early age set in motion what many have come to identify as the making of a Rebel Soul. The multi-talented singer, songwriter, actor, musician and producer has been bubbling within the music world for years, and has already energized music lovers across the globe with collaborations with some of Pop and Hip Hop’s finest. Martin’s last studio album, “Rebel Soul Music,” was one of music underground’s most anticipated albums of 2004, nationwide. Finally set to release his highly anticipated third studio album entitled, ‘Love Is The Hero’ Martin Luther fans should expect to be revitalized, seduced and empowered with a dynamite blend of polished Pop, intoxicating Rock and a whole lotta’ Soul.

Anna Wise and Dane Orr aka Sonnymoon create cosmic soul that channels everything from Bjork to Flying Lotus to J*Davey. On their debut Golden Age they fuse intricate bass heavy post dubstep beats with organic and soaring vocals into a delightfully gorgeous treat. Anna’s incredible vocal range and Dane’s unique sensibilities allow the pair to transform music by Drake and Beyonce into completely new compositions that surprise and inspire. Sonnymoon is at the forefront of the future soul movement and we are pleased to present their final LA show for 2011. Catch them while you can in this intimate setting.

Nikki Grier Interview

Nikki Grier Interview
By Norman Mayers

Nikki Grier is Dr. Dre’s best kept secret. She has been writing hooks for some of hip-hop’s biggest artists over the last few years including 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, and Eminem but in 2011 she stepped out on her own. With a killer mixtape titled Soulgasm Vol. 6, Nikki is selling both sex and soul. Combining neck cracking beats with seductive and soulful vocals, Nikki has a formula that is sure to take her to the big time. Nu-Soul was so happy to speak with this extremely talented artist earlier this year just before she wowed the crowd at one of our events.

Nu-Soul: So you are signed to a songwriting deal with Aftermath. Is that correct?
Nikki Grier: Yes. I have a publishing deal with Dr. Dre.

Nu-Soul: How did that come about?
Nikki Grier: Basically his A&R back in 2006 got a demo from me. And they tried me out for a couple of days writing for an artist he had named Deon. Dre loved the songs and they told me he wanted to meet me. But I didn’t believe it at all. I literally threw on whatever and the the first person I see is Dre. So now I’m freaked out trying to put on lip gloss and all that. He has another songwriter there and he was like “You each are going to get the same tracks and you get an hour. Who ever wows me is going to get the deal.” So the pressure is on. So I went in there and I came up with one full song and pieces to the other tracks. We went in there are there were probably like 30 people in the studio. So we just went back and forth and when we came out he said “I want to sign you.” But the other writer he actually wrote a lot of Detox. His name is Sly Jordan. And we both ended up being on it.

Nu-Soul: So what were some of the first tracks that you wrote that came out?
Nikki Grier: The first track that I wrote that came out was “Fire”. I co-wrote that with 50cent and Sly and a couple of other writers. That was on the Curtis album in 2007. From then on all the artists on Aftermath with the exception of Eve and Marsha [Ambrosius] I’ve pretty much written for.

Nu-Soul: So with you own music what was the genesis of the stuff you eventually put out on your mixtape Soulgasm Vol 6?
Nikki Grier: When I hooked up with Dre, he had such hard beats. And just that soul. Coming from the church, my Dad was a minister, so I came with that very soulful thing. Over his hard beats it just created this lane. Being around all these rappers, some of the cadences that I choose, have this rap style. That’s just how the style developed. The whole theme of Soulgasm is that the music is so soulful it touches you in such a way that it evokes a feeling that is almost orgasmic. So that’s how the whole thing really came together. The sex and the soul. Sex as in your gender and who you are innately but then having to do with your soul, which is you on a deeper level.

Nu-Soul: What was the response to the mixtape been like?
Nikki Grier: The response has been amazing. It’s been surprising. I’ve been sitting in the background for awhile so I just decided to put it out there and give it to people for free and see what happens. I’ve been really blessed. The response has been outta here!

Nu-Soul: So have any new opportunities opened up out of the release of the mixtape?
Nikki Grier: Lots of great things have happened. Even just getting in the mindframe to do the project. When you put the energy out into the universe it comes back to you. And just when I put that energy out I hadn’t seen Busta [Rhymes] in about a year. As soon as I started recording my mixtape I run into him randomly. I was like” You have to get on my record ‘Downtown’”. I think changing your mindset automatically puts things in motion.

Nu-Soul: You have Ms. Jade on your project. We haven’t heard form her in while and it was such a dope feature. How did that come about?
Nikki Grier: I was a fan of Ms. Jade. She is just dope and in a lot of ways underrated. She happened to work with Soul Nana who is one of the producers on Soulgasm. So when we were thinking about people we wanted to feature it was like “Yo let’s do it.”

Nu-Soul: Can you tell us about some of the music you’re working on for the future?
Nikki Grier: Lately I’ve been working on Detox. Still working on Detox with Dre. I’m working with a new artist at Aftermath named Slim the Mobster. I’m also working with Busta on his project and I’m also working on a new installment of Soulgasm, Soulgasm Volume 9. Hopefully people will get my numerology!

J Mitchell Interview

J Mitchell Interview
By Norman Mayers

Probably best known for her slick and bold remix of Exile’s “Summer Song”, Cali-based J. Mitchell is a force to be reckoned with. Smooth vocals, forward thinking beats, musical talent, and a kind spirit are the tools of her trade. Nu-Soul was able to chat with J. Mitchell backstage at one of her shows with us. Get educated on this emerging talent.

Nu-Soul: How did your partnership with Exile come about?
J Mitchell: I met Exile the first year that I moved to Los Angeles, which was ’05. We had a mutual friend who was a producer too. He just came to the door one day and my friend was like, “This is Exile”. So this is maybe like 5 or 6 years ago now. We had just been col then I hit him up on myspace one day and said ”Let’s do something”. He was like”Okay” and there it is.

Nu-Soul: So where are you from originally?
J Mitchell: I grew up in Denver, Colorado. But I was born in Seoul, Korea. I’m a military brat. So we lived in Korea, we lived in Germany, and we lived in Colorado. So that was where I spent most of my time. I’m a child of the world.

Nu-Soul: So I know you also sang with The Rebirth for a while. So do you feel you are just more suited to being a solo artist or that the music you are doing with Exile is just more suited to who you are?
J Mitchell: Definitely. And that was a wonderful experience for me. Being able to work with Loslito. They’ve had that band together for 7 years so the fact that they would give me the opportunity to just learn as much as I did; I left that band a much better singer. It definitely influenced me but I feel what I’m doing now is much more who I am.

Nu-Soul: You did the remix of “Summer Song” for Exile’s remix album so that is how a lot more people found out about you. What has the overall reception to the song been and to the video as well?
J Mitchell: It’s been overwhelming. I’m really happy. There’s been people hitting me up from all over the world. You never really know who’s listening to your music unless people come up to you. But the fact that it was so well received made me feel really good. It’s more than what I expected.

Nu-Soul: What would you say about the California music scene in general?
J Mitchell: Love it! It’s fresh. And I’ve been a lot of places. I just got back from Atlanta. But I just feel that LA has a creative, fresh type of thing that just can’t be duplicated. In Atlanta I meet so many artists that are like “I’m trying to get to LA.” There is just a fresh sound coming out of LA and people are looking to LA to set the trends.

Nu-Soul: So you recording new material with Exile. What can people expect to hear on that project?
J Mitchell: It’s going to be a concept of just beats. It’s hard to describe. I also play the guitar so we are incorporating some of that as well. I call it the electric acoustic odyssey. Lyrically, it’s just positive. It’s not corny though. It would sneak up on someone who’s not into positive music.

Nu-Soul: Who are some of the artists or some of the different scenes and events that you’ve gravitated towards?
J Mitchell: I come from Leimert Park. When I first lived in Los Angeles I lived in Leimert Park so I would go down to the open mike spots and I kinda got refined. I met up with Ta’Raach and Exile. I met the Rebirth. And it slowly started to build up. As far as artists there are so many. I remember seeing Flying Lotus at an open mike spot in Pomona. I remember Jimetta Rose on the poetry circuit. Of course Aceylone, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Exile, Blu, Pudge, HouseShoes, there’s a lot of creative people here. This is a strong community. I’m so happy the cool kids in LA embraced me!
